No More FREE ShoutMix

Yup its true, the developer, Sneck Tan has made it clear. Free service for ShoutMix is not a good business approach and sustainable.  He has spent 7 years provide the ShoutMix for free and I have been using ShoutMix with my blog for couple of years, so I believe we must show our support to the developer to improve the service.

In his Open Letter, with the introduction of ShoutMix V3, a lot of his paid customer convert to free service. That is one of the main reason. He has no other choice.

By offering too much with our free plan, we cannibalized our paid plans. Happy users did not make more paying customers. The projections are bad. Only 0.07% users are customers. These are the people who keep ShoutMix sustainable as a business. Business is the part making ShoutMix exists for everyone. If it keeps on going this way, ShoutMix will not be sustainable any more and will need to close down in the near future.

So the free version is only valid for January 1st, 2012. After that it will stop working unless upgrade to paid plan. I just upgrade to Mini (Hobbyist Plan) cost me 99 cent per month. For me it still cheap and affordable. Plus, you can have 30 days trial. So 12usd per year is not that much.  (more…)

Upgrade to WordPress 3.3 “Sonny”

I have been blogging using WordPress since 2006, a lot of upgrade and enhancement have been made to make it easy to end user. WordPress is a popular blogging software with 65 million downloads since version 3.0 was released.

WordPress is a free and open source blogging tool and publishing platform powered by PHP and MySQL. It is often customized into a content management system (CMS).[4] It has many features including a plug-in architecture and a template system. WordPress is used by over 14.7% of Alexa Internet‘s “top 1 million” websites and as of August 2011 powers 22% of all new websites.[5] WordPress is currently the most popular CMS in use on the Internet.[6][7]

It was first released on May 27, 2003, by Matt Mullenweg[1] as a fork of b2/cafelog. As of February 2011, version 3.0 had been downloaded over 32.5 million times.[8] – from Wikipedia

As usual, the latest version of the WordPress software — 3.3 or “Sonny” is in honor of the great jazz saxophonist Sonny Stitt . It  is available for download or update inside your WordPress dashboard.

I already upgrade to Sonny and this latest release the Developer has improved on user experience, smooth navigation, easy uploading and imports. Maybe you can check the video that summarizes all the great features.

Infolinks Monetize your site without slowing it down

Other than Google Adsense, Infolinks is another method that I use to make money online. I did Kontera before, but the earning is not that much. A study was published online saying that Infolinks is 50 times faster than other In-Text Ads Network. This is great news. As we all know,  earlier this year Google announced that website load time impacts Google Page Rank. In simple words, if your site load very slow, you will get lower rank from Google. You can check your site load time with Google’s Page Speed Tool. Test yours now!

Personally, I don’t really bother about this Page Rank issue. The main thing is to write better content on your blog. Increase traffic and related ad will make your traffic click. If your site load fast but with no real issues, then it will be so bad. However, fast load still important to maintain your traffic.

The Infographic below examines 3 popular site elements, Toolbars, In-Text Ads and Social Buttons and how they are affecting your speedy ways. Read on for some practical tips to keep your site in the fast lane.

Keep in mind the following points before reviewing the Google Page Rank Race Infographic below to improve your overall speed and search ranking for your own websites and blogs:

  • The longer it takes to your page to load, the lower rank your page receives
  • Higher Page Rank = More Google Traffic
  • More Concise Code = Faster and more pleasant browsing experience
  • Javascript can greatly slow down the speed and performance of your web site
