Cheap Broadband in Malaysia
The broadband internet culture in Malaysia is developing fast, and since 2006 nearly three quarters of a million people have been connected to the internet via a broadband connection. Everything from ADSL services to fibre optic cable broadband and mobile broadband are available from a variety of providers all competing for business, which keeps the market competitive.
Malaysian Broadband Providers
The largest provider of ADSL broadband in Malaysia is TMnet, and arm of Telekom Malaysia, and they offer a good value, cheap broadband package called Streamyx which offers up to 4Mbps download speeds, and the cheaper packages are sold with a fixed amount of hours use available each month. For slightly more money you get faster speeds, a fixed monthly price with unlimited usage and a free modem, but there is a lot of choice in terms of what kind of package you can afford and you can choose based on price as well as your individual needs. TMnet also offer business broadband packages which are tailored to the needs of business use, from the home worker right up to the medium or large business. Jaring Flite Wired is the second largest provider, offering up to 1Mbps download speed during peak times on a 24 month contract with monthly payments. Alternatively you can pay one lump sum at the beginning of a 12 month period are receive a free modem, and of course you then won`t have to worry about paying for your service monthly. Each package comes with 5 free email addresses and 500MB of inbox space. If you want a wireless solution rather than an ADSL service then airzed is a good choice. They offer both Wi-Fi hotspots in more than 200 locations around Malaysia as well as the latest in Wi-MAX technology for homes and businesses. Wi-MAX is essentially a very powerful Wi-Fi broadcast that can cover wider areas than Wi-Fi hotspots and makes is a viable alternative to land line broadband and direct competition for mobile broadband.
Finding Cheap Deals
The best way to find cheap broadband packages and compare deals in Malaysia is to use a broadband comparison website. Ranking ISPs by their speed, coverage and monthly costs will help you decide, and it`s always important to decide what you want from your broadband connection before you start looking so that you have a rough idea of what kind of deal will suit you, whether it is a fast connection or the convenience of Wi-Fi or Wi-MAX. Keep your budget in mind and don`t just settle for the first deal you see, as comparison sites will take the time and effort out of shopping for a cheap broadband package.
Last week, my Billion Modem (a broadband modem supplied by TM ) was damage due to lightning. Lets do some flashback..
That was the second time my modem was struck by lightning. The first incident happened early this year. My internet connection was down when I got back home with my family from my sister’s in law house. My house was blacked-out and the main switch was turned off. So I tried to check my connection and configuration. After trying to reconfigure my Aztech Wireless Broadband Router, connect and reconnect to modem still did not solve the problem. I suspected that my modem was damaged even though the power and connection LED was on. Finally, my intuition was right when my modem was not working when I tested at my office Streamyx Connection.
So I called TM Customer Service, as usual they will asked you to check your setup and network connection. After they were satisfied that my networking configuration was fine, they told me that they will ask their technician to fix the problem in 2 days. But after 2 days, the technician did not show up. I made another friendly call to TM asking what wrong with their technical support.
Immediately the next day, a guy from TM came to my house and brought a new modem. He tested Streamyx connection and made a direct connection with my modem by Ethernet cable, and confirmed that my modem was damaged by power imbalance where an unexpected increase in the current voltage, also known as surge. It usually cause by lightning.
The 2nd Strike
My problem internet was solved after getting new modem. I thought the lightning can only damage your electronic device through power cable. So every time when I go to work, I will turn off the main switch. But I was wrong, when my house blacked-out again and my internet connection was down. Not Again, I said to myself. When I checked, there was no connection with modem using Ethernet cable. So my modem was damaged.
This time, I directly called TM and report about my modem. Again, TM always surprised me. The customer service told me, they cannot replace my modem anymore as the modem warranty is just for 1 year. WHATTT !!!. He told me to buy new one by myself. If you read my previous entry, Streamyx Bill Paid Online, I did mention that my Merdeka Unlimited Package (Streamyx ) is for 2 years that end October next year.
What choices do I have ? I have to bought new modem to replace my Billion Streamyx Modem. Somehow I felt I was unfairly treated as a customer. Why do you offer a service that I have to oblige for 2 years but your product warranty is just for 1 year? On top of that, you gave me a cap Ayam brand modem that cannot withstand surge while my Aztech Wireless Broadband works perfectly fine.. I will tell you what is the main cause of my Modem being damage again and again.Poor Me
I have been invited to a Business Conference in Saujana Hotel, Subang by one of my client last week. The objective of the conference is to gather all vendor and share our feedback on their business policy.
But what I want to share here is the humble opening speech and vision by the company CEO, YBhg Dato’ Sri Hj. Mahamad Fathil bin Dato’ Mahmood, father of Malaysian Equestrian and love horse sport very much.
Dato’ Seri in white sleeves on the left
He started as junior executive in Pernas after finishing MCKK . From there he got promoted to Supervisor and started his company 42 years ago. With his knowledge and business experience, he would like to share with us. He only go Hard Work University, where ? It’s in your head. Now he runs a few company with overhead cost half a billion ringgit. Remember, just overhead..so you can calculate how much money he make.
Actually, I was enlighten by his speech when he mentioned that what he is doing now is for the next world /akhirat.His vision is to see all small bumiputra vendors to succeed and stand on our own by the next ten years. He even mentioned that Dewan Perniagaan Melayu fails to help their member, by having one voice to push government. So by providing more Marketing Seminar, Vendor Development and Business Seminar , he hope that we can get the best business advise from his team.
A lot of company complained that they did not get an equal opportunity when submitting tender. They claimed that they work hard with R&D but still other supplier who get the same product online in the internet win the tender. But this kind of supplier even tough they can supply with 25% cheaper, usually do not have after sales services and repair cost will be higher since Government agency have to send the product it to Singapore or overseas.
There is one company that asked for advise on how to get distributor/dealer from over sea company. Because they claimed that they can do the job but foreign company refuse to give them sole distributor. Well, in my case we usually get the job first then get the distributor agency provided they have none agency here in Malaysia. So work with a new but potential foreign company :).
Money is not everything, its the deeds that count
I hope more business tycoon can help new business entrepreneur/bumiputra to develop and stand by our own feet without cable/godfather/political figure backing. If we have a genuine idea/great product than I believe , we can succeed in business. Hopefully by God willing. If we just want to be Alibaba, take the project and give it to 3rd party than we will not last long in this business.
We can get help from other non bumi, but learn from them. Don’t depend on them. Be transparent and with integrity.
We live in multiracial country peacefully and harmony. We don’t want to be like Thailand or Philippines.
It’s a big cake, so share the wealth with others. 🙂
A few months ago, Muridi Mohammad from Perlis was shocked when his money has been missing from his CIMB account. He received an SMS telling him he had won RM14,000 in an Akademi Fantasia 6 (AF6) competition. All he had to do to claim his winnings was to telephone the number given.
When he called, a man claiming to be from Astro asked for Muridi’s bank account number to deposit his winnings. Though he was hesitant, he did so. Fortunately he had enough sense to give an account with little money in it.
“I gave him the account my tenant uses to pay the rent.” The CIMB account had a balance of just over RM300.
Although this case is not new, but this poor Ustaz still want to try his luck. He just gave his account number just to see wether the scammer will deposit money or not. But it turns out, the scammer manage to withdraw money from his account two times. About an hour later he checked the account and found that two payments of RM120 had been made to “I-PYMT TO COLL”.
The BIG question here, how this criminal manage to withdraw money just using user account’s number. Really strange. I think this guys are really professional, even CIMB never release a statement about their system flaw.So just use thumb rule, if the offer is too good, then it is a scam. Don’t try to outsmart them. Maybe your are dealing with international criminal :). (more…)
